This is the sixth event of our project "Art Speaks" and this time we invited artists who work with themes of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
Oleksandra Bohdan is an artist originally from Sumy. Her art was formed on art and animation education and experience in digital communications. In her work, she explores Ukrainianness, modern folk symbols, movement, time and people. She works with video art, animation and static media, where she has recently used building materials.
Kateryna Khramtsova is an artist who studied law in Kharkiv. After moving to Prague in 2019, she focused on visual art and activism. In her works, she addresses the themes of social injustice, psychological problems and human rights, in particular queer identity in the army. She directed the film “QIRIM” — it was an attempt to talk about Crimea and its occupation by Russia. The film tells the story of Antonina Romanova’s resistance to Russian colonial influence on the Crimean peninsula. Actually, at the meeting we will watch this film and talk about performance in the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
Synopsis of the short film:
On February 25, 2022, Antonina Romanova, together with her partner, joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, she was a director, performer and actress.
“My name is Antonina Romanova and I am a non-binary person”. We learn about her participation in the activities of the Crimean Tatars and the Euromaidan protest, her escape from Crimea and her involvement in the Ukrainian fight against the Russian invasion. The film consists of puzzles from different elements, is not afraid of experimentation, and a personal story in the face of an uncompromising enemy becomes a metaphor for Ukrainian strength.
