We invite you to the opening of the exhibition of Dnipro artist Bohdan Buchkovsky "Graze Pavlo the cowww", which will take place on October 24 at 6:30 PM at the Artsvit Gallery. The project will last until January 11, 2025.
This is the artist's first solo exhibition. The exhibition is composed of works created after the start of the full-scale invasion. The project tells about the path of restoring Bohdan's life and artistic practice, his search for a new visual language.
Buchkovsky turns to meditative practices, such as sewing, thereby emphasizing the importance of daily work, a kind of stoicism that is sometimes invisible in everyday affairs. In his works, the artist sought to emphasize manual labor: embroidery, stamping, collage, carved elements from wood, etc. The series “Graze Pavlo the cowww” was made without sketches, the artist says, everything was immediately composed on a blank canvas.
“If something went wrong, I left it and continued on. The same with titles: words came to me during work or after completion, and I left them, without choosing other options. It is difficult to describe creativity in words - if it were possible to do so, I would not be engaged in creativity. There is something more in the works than what can be described in words. I want the paintings to be modern and at the same time retain some warmth, simplicity and wisdom,” — Bohdan Buchkovsky.
Bohdan also experimented with the basis for his creative expression: a cut canvas (diptych “Boats”), plywood (“Window”), palette (“Voice of the Earth”), cardboard (“House”) and a canvas without a primer — this is where the artist ultimately stops. A rather symbolic gesture — the rejection of the primer, which usually determines the strength and durability of the work, reveals uncertainty about the future, says the project’s curator Oleksandra Shovkun. But the artist’s most important discovery was the futuristic poetry of Mykhailo Semenko, the so-called poetic painting, a mixture of languages — visual and verbal, which he supplemented with objects using various techniques.
“Attempts to find “linguistic equivalents” to the artist’s main images and concepts, such as “home” and “key,” begin a long and arduous journey back to his own artistic practice. Semenko’s poem “Pavlo, feed the cow!” becomes like a credo for Bohdan. The daily reminder — not to stop and act despite everything — brings him back to life in this reality with an even greater desire to explore his native land with a renewed artistic language,” — Oleksandra Shovkun, curator of the exhibition.
