On September 10 at 6:30 PM, we will watch the last two video works — "Odesa. Fragment 205" by Andriy Sylvestrov and Yuriy Leiderman and "What Will You Do If the War Continues?" by Vladislav Plisetsky.
“Odesa. Fragment 205” (2015) is part of the “Birmingham Ornament” project, on which Yuriy Leiderman worked together with director Andriy Sylvesterov. This video, created specifically for the 2015 Kyiv School Biennale, focuses on the phenomenon of modern Odessa and Odessans, showing it through a tangle of complex social, historical, political and cultural aspects.
The project appeals to the complex social and political changes that took place in Ukraine in 2014, namely the “Revolution of Dignity” or “Eurorevolution” and its consequences. Which essentially divided Ukraine into two political blocs: Euro and pro-Russian oriented and provoked an officially unrecognized, but real war between Ukraine and Russia. Odesa in this context has always occupied a separate place, emphasizing its uniqueness.
In the video, a group of people slowly walk through the streets of Odessa, something like a religious procession, carrying works by artist Valentin Khrushch in their hands. During the procession, phrases from Oleg Petranko’s Facebook posts are heard, and the participants in the procession communicate with each other using these phrases. From time to time, a recording with announcers is included, the texts of which largely explain the general context of the video.
“What Will You Do If the War Continues?” (2025) is the second part of Vladislav Plisetsky’s trilogy, begun even before the full-scale invasion. The film explores how a protracted war changes society, political narratives, and personal reality. Through his own biography, performances, dialogue with his father, and the transformation of the Ukrainian queer community, the author shows the collision of identities, cultures, and ideologies. The war becomes the backdrop for deeply personal stories and visual narratives that merge into an artistic manifesto.
The first video lasts 28 min., the second - 38 min. 15 sec.
