Where do readers grow?

22 лютого 2025 - 31 травня 2025

Press Release

We are launching a new project for parents as part of the “Artsvit for Kids” program called “Where do readers grow?” This is a series of conversations and discussions about the sustaining power of reading aloud with children.

Many people know that growing exotic plants at home is a rather difficult and painstaking process, but nurturing a child’s love of books, especially in this digital age, is no easier. That is why we want to help encourage little ones to read.

The goal of the project: to provide parents with tools for spending quality time with their children and show ways to easily introduce the habit of reading into the family’s everyday life, and engage in book creativity together. During our meetings, you will learn about interesting techniques and materials that can be used at home during reading sessions with children.

In particular, during the classes we will talk about modern Ukrainian books and why they are so important; about how to interact with children in a reading context and read with children of different ages (does this really require special reading skills on both sides?), choose books by Ukrainian children's authors and who they are; we will learn about world bestsellers of children's literature, awards and ratings, what is the role of libraries and librarians in all this. We will also destroy our own stereotypes about children's reading: why it is important for a child to have personal space and the right not to read a certain book, what to read with children at different ages - from birth, what little ones are reading now.

The project starts on February 22. The course consists of 8 meetings, we will meet once every two weeks, on Saturdays, at 4:00 PM. Class Topics:

♦ Cartoon Books - February 22
♦ Picture Books - March 8
♦ Comics and Graphic Novels - March 22
♦ Fantasy, Fairy Tales, Science Fiction - April 5
♦ Popular Science Books and Non-Fiction - April 19
♦ Realistic Prose - May 3
♦ Poetry and Poems for Children - May 17
♦ Humor and Complex Themes in Children's Books - May 31

We will inform participants about changes in the date and time of classes on social networks and in the project group chat.

The finale of the project will be that parents will create their own art books for their children. Also, during the classes we will use books from our mobile children's library, which the Artsvit gallery received last year as part of the “Suitcase with Books” project from the Goethe-Institut. These are 22 books that were selected by experts in children's literature: Yuliya Kozlovets, Oleksandra Savchenko, Valentyna Vzdulska, Tetyana Stus, Oksana Lushchevska, Kateryna Sukhorebska and Kateryna Mikhalitsyna.

The classes will be held at 21a Krutohirnyi Uzviz, Artsvit Gallery. Entrance through the glass sliding doors from the side of Uspenskaya Square.

Entrance is free.

Please note! To participate, you need to register for each class. Every week we will publish a new registration form for the next class, so stay tuned. Participation in the program is free.

The educational platform “Artsvit for Kids” has been operating since 2014. Each of its iterations touches on new topics and techniques, but one thing remains unchanged - the desire to open the world of art to children. We are convinced that through creativity, a child gets to know himself better and acquires various skills that are useful in adult life and any profession, even technical ones.

However, we emphasize that this project is not an academic education, our teachers do not teach children to draw. Communication is an important factor in the program, we want to integrate children and adolescents into the artistic community, establish a dialogue, and refute the idea that art is something boring and difficult to understand. We believe that the younger generation deserves to have a broad worldview, and art and culture in general not only enriches aesthetically, but also educates conscious citizens.
