Secondary Archive. Dnipro. Artsvit Gallery

05 липня 2023 - 02 вересня 2023

Press Release

The Secondary Archive is a unique online archive of statements by female artists from Central and Eastern Europe, launched by the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation (Warsaw, Poland). In 2021, Artsvit Gallery became the Ukrainian partner of this important initiative.

This online platform was created in response to the problem of the lack of visibility of women from Central and Eastern Europe in the modern history of art. The digital archive aims to draw attention to the work of artists from this region and create a space where they can express their active position.

The Secondary Archive contains verified and systematized information about artists from three different generations. So far, the platform has collected about 500 textual statements by artists from Poland, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Belarus, as well as Albania, Kosovo, and Serbia.

The online presentation of the Ukrainian part of the Archive, which includes 50 names, took place on February 23, 2022. The research was curated by Kateryna Yakovlenko, Oksana Bryukhovetska, Kateryna Rusetska, and Iryna Polikarchuk.

In July 2022, 14 audio works by Ukrainian artists were presented at the Manifesta 14 Biennale (Pristina, Kosovo) as part of the Secondary Archive special project, and on the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, they were played in a public space in Warsaw, in the window of the Warsaw Cultural Observatory.

Starting July 5, visitors to the Artsvit gallery will be able to hear these audio statements. The installation in Dnipro will run until August 5.
