We invite you to watch the experimental short film "What Should We Do with These Buildings?", which is about the unconscious dialogue between the Soviet architecture of Kharkiv and the city's residents. The public screening will take place on October 12, together with actor and co-producer of the film Mykola Naboka, as part of the educational performance program "DIYezmist", starting at 6:00 PM.
The film was created by English theatre director Jonathan Ben-Shaul in September 2021 during his stay at the Kharkov Residency at Slovo in Yuriy Shevelyov's apartment. As part of the residency, he worked on researching the Soviet architecture of Kharkov, in an attempt to reinterpret it through movement and the body.
The film consists of two parts: conversational (in the form of interviews) and abstract (in the form of movement studies). The first is conversations with people whose stories intersect with these buildings in one way or another. And the second is the bodily reaction of two Kharkov actors, Mykola Naboka and Igor Klyuchnyk, to the dynamic features of each building.
The world premiere of the film took place on June 11, 2022 in Norway as part of the Norwegian Short Film Festival. The film was also shown in the UK, France, Portugal, Estonia, Germany, Sweden and Poland.
The film will be shown in Ukrainian (*some phrases sound in Russian) with English subtitles. After the screening, the audience will have the opportunity to discuss the film with Mykola Naboka.
The event will last 1.5 hours - before the screening, the actor will talk about the history of the film and the methodology that formed the basis of this film.
