Construction festival V: Reality. OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS

Kultura Medialna announces an open call for artists for participation in the fifth edition of the Construction festival that will take place in June 2018 in Dnipro, Ukraine.

The project offers selected 3 participants from EU countries and 3 participants from Ukraine a residency opportunity for conducting artistic research, creating new works and projects or adapt their existing projects for the local context. All works will be presented at the annual international festival of audiovisual art and new media in urban space Construction.

Festival Construction was created 4 years ago by a group of friends as a festival of audiovisual art and new media. It was built on the ideas of decentralization of cultural processes, overcoming the humanitarian crisis. Motivated by both good and bad changes in social, economic and political spheres and decided that now is the best time to disrupt the cultural stagnation in the city. Dnipro is a perfect city for contemporary music and art. It's a cultural desert with industrial and post-soviet spirit, sparsed with the abandoned and unfinished buildings and forgotten spaces. Through its 4-year run, the festival had artists from more than 20 countries. It used 30 different and unique locations and was attended by more than 15 000 people. This year Construction festival will be held on 6-10 of June.

The festival combines topics of urban planning, social and cultural development, and creative needs of people living in post-industrial and post-soviet cities and appeals to physical and perceived image of the city, discovering a new vision of its peculiarities and raising attention to our commons: space, responsibility and future.

Dnipro is the fourth biggest city in Ukraine with a million inhabitants and a grand industrial and rocket building past. Because of this industry, Dnipro was a closed city from the end of the 1950s until the end of 1980s - it means no citizen of a foreign country (even of the socialist ones) was allowed to visit Dnipro. This spirit of "the rocket closed city" still has a huge influence on cultural situation and mentality. The war conflict happening in the east of the country that is 4 hours away from Dnipro definitely added a different meaning to some of the art and music projects. Space industry also had its influence on the architecture - that's why there are some awesome examples of retro-futuristic architecture.
