Odesa has historically developed an original artistic tradition that has been existed and developed since the founding of the Society of South-Russian Artists in 1890, that was led by Kyriak Kostandi.
In Soviet times, with comparative freedom from strict ideological control, under which the art schools and academies of Moscow and Leningrad operated, the Odessa School, based on a strong historical Italian-French tradition, provided a good classical education. The works of artists of the "Odessa School" are marked by high technical professionalism, a huge variety of artistic handwriting and technology and a special spirit of creative freedom.
