Ukrainian cultural institutions during the war years. The Dnipro experience | Lecture by Iryna Polikarchuk

On February 24, 2022, the lives of Ukrainians were divided into BEFORE and AFTER. Since then, thousands of tragedies have occurred, and today the war continues. Despite everything, we learned not only to survive and fight for freedom but also to continue living and making social changes. All Ukrainian cultural institutions were forced to cancel their programs a year ago. Someone relocated or closed, and others began adapting to new conditions. Especially in cities bordering the front line, such as our Dnipro. Our director Iryna Polikarchuk will soon talk about this experience at a lecture in Poland – Ukraińskie instytucje kultury w czasie wojny. Doświadczenie Dnipra | Wykład Iryny Polikarczuk

Now she is a resident of the Labirynt Gallery in Lublin. During the residency, Iryna aims to learn more and take over Galeria Labirynt’s experience in working with children and its inclusive approaches to the audience. She will also share information about Ukrainian creative society and talk about experiences of Ukrainian cultural institutions during the ongoing war.

We are Starting the Lecture Programme «Ukrainian Art: Decolonizing Perspectives» This September

«Ukrainian Art: Decolonizing Perspectives» is a series of lectures running from mid-September to mid-November. Invited speakers include Kateryna Yakovlenko, Oksana Barshynova, Anastasiia Manuliak, Aliona Penzii, Alya Segal, Sviatoslav Chyruk and others.

The programme examines the colonial influence on several generations of Ukrainians from different angles of view, with particular attention to Dnipro and the eastern regions of Ukraine. Many of us grew up in an environment where Russian narratives dominated in education, in the media, and in the art. Today, we critically rethinking the contours and extent of this influence and learning to distinguish what is ours from what was imposed on us. This is not only a cultural process but also a personal one: a process of reclaiming an identity alienated by Moscow-centrism and russification.
